Kauai

We were lucky enough to visit the beautiful Hawaiian island of Kauai for spring break.  We drove to LA in the middle of the night to catch an early morning flight. The reservation got messed up and we ended up with a room with only 2 queen beds so we had to sleep three to a bed. As we lay in the dark trying to shift around and get comfortable Kylie found the bright side, "well, at least we're a skinny family".  The flight went good, thanks to the mommy treat bags that everyone teased me about and ended up loving. Especially poor Jayden who had to sit by himself in the back of the plane and was embarrassed to open up his lunch bag labeled with his name in front of strangers. We made it to Hawaii where after 6 hours of no data they were dying to play Rules of Survival again, which is actually fun to see Kylie and Jayden bonding over a shared interest. So there we sat in the pouring rain with roosters running around our feet while Jason got the rental car. And then it kept raining and raining and raining. We ate at Hamura Saimin where Jason made friends with the locals, as he always does, then we picked up groceries and felt like we were in NZ with the crazy prices ($5.37 for a gallon of milk!) then drove to get our first glimpse of the beach and prayed that the rain wouldn't ruin our vacation.

We also had to get shave ice from Hee Fats which did not disappoint. What did disappoint was when Maddox lost his top before he got his first bite.

The next day we woke up to rain so we opted for a hike instead of the beach. We stopped for a second at the Wailua falls lookout then headed up to the Kuilau Ridge Trail. It was an incredible hike, I loved the beautiful native forest and the lookout point at the top was spectacular. I was glad we wore water shoes because the trail was so muddy and the kids had fun splashing in all the puddles. I was also glad it was a rental car.

Everyone wanted a turn getting their picture out on the lookout point. We were laughing because I would make the other people duck down so they weren't in the picture, here is Kylie the creeper.

And then Kylie and I made an executive decision that a hoodie didn't go along with the island vibe so here is his photo that we captioned "naked and afraid". We had a lot of fun cracking ourselves up out here and sliding all over as we tried to scale back up the muddy bank.

We tried out the beach by our condo, but it wasn't a swimmable beach. We headed to Lydgate Beach which was a perfect kid friendly beach but the weather still wasn't cooperating. At one point I was huddled under 3 towels using the boogie boards as a shield from the wind and rain. It was a cold wet start to our Hawaiian beach vacation, but we did get to experience little glimpses of beauty and couldn't wait to explore more!
