Thanksgiving 2018

It was a bit chaotic prepping for Thanksgiving with major bathroom renovations underway. We were down to the wire as we were finishing touch up paint when Grandma's plane was landing. We managed to get it done in time and it was so nice to finally be able to sit and relax for the first time in two weeks.  I didn't start the pies until around 11pm the night before because of the bathroom project, but Kylie and Jason kept me company watching The Ringer (in honor of Kylie and her wisdom teeth) while I baked 4 different pies until around 2:30 am. Thankfully Grandma Young, Jessica and John weren't arriving until around 5 pm so that we could sleep in a little bit.  I enjoy eating the turkey dinner as much as the next guy, but for me my favorite part of the holiday is actually the prep. I love being in the kitchen with Christmas music on and candles burning while I cook our favorite family recipes. I especially loved having the kids in the kitchen helping me. It was such a fun day filled with all the preparations and then we enjoyed a nice dinner with family that night.

The day after Thanksgiving Kylie convinced me to take her to the mall for black Friday shopping. It's a good thing I love her so much because that was the last place I wanted to be! Everyone else went for a hike and played pickle ball at the church. We also went to the lake and cruised around. It was a little chilly but peaceful to have the whole lake practically to ourselves.

We also set up the Christmas decorations and watched Elf. I love this time of year and the chance to reflect on everything we have to be grateful for!

Little Things

I can't believe the year is almost to an end! We have managed to stay busy with big things and little things in between. Here are a few of the random going ons....

Every year we want to get pictures at the cotton fields, but they're only in bloom for such a short time that we never manage to do it. This year we finally made it happen. Sure love this beautiful girl of mine! Even if she refuses to eat baby carrots, unless they're petite cut because the other kind look like thumbs. I especially loved our movie night watching Hitch on the laptop in her room. Sorry again for farting so much in your bed. Sorry also for acting so immature and giggling in the Walmart aisle at the old people buying protection. But it was a really funny memory. And I do love that you have kept a gratitude journal for the past year, such a great example.

I love conference weekend. Listening to inspiring talks, eating cinnamon rolls, snacking on treats and of course puzzles. Even if I am the only one that actually does the puzzles, with a little help from Maddox at times. This year everyone finally pitched in at the end, even my brother Tyson, so that I would stop working on the puzzle and finally fix dinner.

Maddox received an award at school for having all A's and B's. He is really thriving this year, it makes me happy.

Ryder's music class put on their Thanksgiving performance and it was adorable. Even if he was flossing when he was supposed to be square dancing.

Kylie has had back pain for years. We have tried physical therapy without much luck so we decided to take her to a  chiropractor and the x-ray showed that one leg is shorter than the other and she has slight scoliosis, we had no idea! He gave her a shoe insert and it has helped.

Ryder finished another season of soccer with his buddies. I love that they have been playing together for the past 3 years, they're so cute to watch and have grown and improved a lot.

Janessa and Abby came for a quick weekend visit. We had a fun girl's lunch at The Farm at South Mountain. I've been wanting to go here for a while and this was the perfect excuse. The food was delicious, the weather was perfect and the atmosphere was so charming. Janessa and I took a million pictures, but somehow didn't manage to take a single picture of us together. I just love spending time with her and we ended up giggling into the early hours of the morning. Thankfully Jason was out of town so we didn't keep him awake with all our squeals. She just so happened to come the same weekend we started our bathroom renovations, which meant we had one toilet to share between 8 people. It was pretty comical.

We headed up to our condo for Veteran's Day. It was a quick weekend, but I just love relaxing together in front of the fire, eating good food, playing games and watching movies. I know the kids complain about the long drive and that they're bored, but I hope they will look back on these weekends with fondness.

Everyone told me the teenage years would be hard, but no one told me just how much fun they would be. We have a standing lunch date every other Wednesday on Kylie's half day and it's the highlight of my week.

Do you know what else was a highlight? When Kylie got her wisdom teeth taken out. It wasn't a very fun recovery (especially dealing with an infection 3 weeks later), but she was HILARIOUS when she was all drugged up. Her speech was slurred and she was convinced they had given her down syndrome instead of taking her wisdom teeth out. She decided it was okay because people with down syndrome go straight to heaven. "Not like you hoes". She was an angry drunk and kept calling everyone "hoes". She also confessed to all sorts of things like rubbing Jayden's toothbrush on the bathroom floor when she was mad at him. We have plenty of videos that will keep us laughing for years to come! Her friends were so great to come visit her and bring milkshakes, and mostly just hang out and laugh at all the funny things she was saying. Addi was nice and brought her Canes because that was all she was craving, so she made a chicken and french fry milkshake. Yum.

I was able to chaperone Maddox's field trip to the State Capitol. I'll be honest, it didn't sound like the most exciting field trip of choice, but it ended up being really interesting (besides getting threatened with a screw driver by a homeless man, "move along children"...). I just loved spending time with him and now we want to go back and watch a live senate hearing!

The bus ride is never my favorite, an hour spent with 60 kids in a small space is enough to give anyone a headache, but they were cute playing Heads Up.

We were planning to renovate two of the bathrooms and laundry room back when we did the floors, but we got a little burned out. We decided to tackle them this Fall and thought Thanksgiving would be a good deadline. It was a good idea in theory, except that we didn't get started until two weeks before. It was a crazy busy two weeks as we designed, did demo, hired out tile work, repainted walls, painted cabinets, installed hardware, installed a new vanity, mirror, toilets and baseboards, hung shiplap and shopped for new shower curtains, rugs and decor. We were up until midnight almost every night and were at Lowes or Home Depot almost every day (my record was three times in 24 hrs). It was exhausting, but we LOVE how it all turned out!

And that's what the last month or so has looked like at the Young house!
