Smelling is Overrated
Once upon a time, there was a little third grade girl who was so excited to go to her school's Halloween carnival. Everything was going great, her spirits soared as she even won the cake walk. But it all came to an abrupt end when a heavy duty pan fell off of Johnny Appleseed's head and landed right on this poor little girl's nose. The only thing she could think to do was to spend the rest of the evening crying under the fishing booth table and using wadded up napkins to stop the bleeding. It was a sad day and resulted in a broken nose that left the poor girl with hardly any sense of smell. That is until she got pregnant......I swear people, we live in a stinky, stinky world! I thought I was deprived all these years without my sense of smell, but I'm beginning to think that it was a blessing in disguise! I'm discovering smells that I never knew existed each time I open a box of cereal, the dishwasher, the dryer, the car door, the garbage lid, the bread bag, any canned foods, dresser drawers, my closet, etc. Don't even get me started on farts and bad breath. Poor Jason, I couldn't even kiss him when I picked him up from the airport from his snowboarding trip because the smell of the carmex on his lips was enough to make me want to hurl. I had to drive the rest of the way home with the windows down, eventhough it was midnight and freezing. The worst by far (besides the stinky cows living on Queen Creek Road) is any kind of food. I used to love using the crock pot, but I tried it last week and it made me nauseous just to walk in my house. I'm still airing out the smell to this day. I'm afraid that I've been scarred for life from my favorite Lime Chicken Tacos recipe since that is the crock pot culprit whose scent has now permeated every crevis in my house. Green onions and garlic are my worst enemies. I can't stand walking into restraunts, because of that woosh of smells that attacks you as soon as you open the door. Even my beloved Mangos, I knew I was a goner the minute I walked in the door and my predictions were right as I was throwing up every last bit of my bean burrito when we got home. So you can take back your coveted smelling powers, I'm quite happy enjoying life with only four senses!

Whoa! You've got it bad. I've noticed I can smell everything, but it doesn't bother me, well, not now anyway. During my morning sickness, though, that was another story. It's a good thing...it means everything is going well! The one that I think is funny is cereal: I know kind what kind of cereal Jeremy's eating when I'm upstairs and he's downstairs... weird.
Oh man, bean burritos are the worst thing to throw up EVER! I thought it was the best thing when I finally felt like eating something other than bread and lemonade. Not good! I had a bean burrito and it took me about 45 min. to get that sucker back up. So heavy! Sorry, this is probably a little gross but I totally feel for you. Be careful, to this day I can't eat tuna fish sandwiches and bean burritos since I threw them up while pregnant 5 years ago! Just avoid any food that you really love, just in case!
And your right, that smelling thing is so overrated, but I have always wondered how it affects your sense of taste.
Kelly, it probably didn't bother you because you are used to smelling things. For me it's a rude awakening for my senses! It's not like I couldn't smell anything before, it was just small little hints of a smell and now it's so over powering! And Jodee, yes, I had a hard time just getting the burrito down but it was 10 times worse coming back up! Isn't it funny how there are certain foods that you still can't eat? Mine is that horrid "Zupa Tuscano" or whatever it's called at Olive Garden. Jayden's pregnancy did it in for me. As far as the taste goes, I'm not sure since I don't know any different. I do know that I can't distinguish between flavors of candy like starbursts, skittles, jolly ranchers, etc. (unless it's like sour apple or something hot) they all taste the same. Is that normal?
Your smell/taste thing is freakin me out! Weird... I do relate with the smell thing and Garlic, don't even get me started, if Glenn eats it he can't come near me for 2 days, not kidding! I too am ready to go back to my happy world of only smelling what I can instead of having this crazy new smeller! I don't remember it being as bad with the others, but this time it's killing me! Hang in there, areyou usually sick the whole time or just in the beginning?
NO! It's not normal! All starbursts are not created equal, my dear. I feel for you though. It ruined Stuffed Shells for me, one of my favorites! That's such a bummer! I think Jodee is right, avoid your faves, but of course you think "your faves" are the only thing that will not fail you! Wrong! Stick to citrus, saltines & bread, But PLEASE promise me one thing...NEVER, EVER even think about even touching....
a ChIcKeN pOt PiE!!!!!!!!!!
You need to find a candle that you can handle and have that lit. I'm a huge fan of the great smelling candles, personally I love Gold Canyon sweet pea or cinnamon. Is there a scent that you can enjoy right now?
Oh you poor thing. I can totally commiserate and it is the worst! I couldn't stand our first apartment when I was pregnant with kelsey. Just any smell of it. I feel so bad for you! I hope it passes very, very quickly.
Not to make light of your issues but I'm totally laughing! Just think of all the weight you AREN'T gaining by being repulsed by food. Look at the bright side, you got to enjoy your delicious burrito and not gain an ounce. :)
I am relating in a big way ... no, not right now, but the memories of pregnant smells and tastes - yuck! So, lucky you and the lack of smell! I'm up for hanging out next week. Maybe Tuesday or Wednesday - what do you think? Thanks for reinviting me!
I feel so bad for you right now! You made me re-live some memories I wanted to forget. Someone mentioned candles which reminded me of the Gold Canyon one that smells like 7-up; I can't remember the name of it but I carried it around with me when I was pregnant, never lit it, just stuck my nose in it. AND Yes, its normal to lose a bit of your flavor recognition when you lose your sense of smell. We've got a couple of really good guy friends who have the same issues, both caused by trauma to the face. They're great fun on road trips in a full car.
jamie! I totally hear ya! With every pregnancy, smells would make me so sick. Like cooking ground beef! Oh that smell is horrid! Poor jamie :)
You crack me up! I actually read this the other night as I was packing and didn't get a chance to leave a comment. Sorry, I'm such a slacker:) I totally remember that fateful night at the Halloween carnival. If only we'd have known how that night would affect the rest of your life. I hope your sense of smell goes away soon and you can get back to your simple, scentless life. Ha, ha!
Welcome to my personal hell. My nose is on overdrive pregnant or not. It sucks!
Hopefully you will get past the sick stage SOON! It is no fun, but just think of that sweet little baby you are cooking and it is so worth it (easy for me to say, because I am not prego!)
Oh Jamie! This is the #1 thing I dislike about being pregnant. It's so ... ANNOYING! I remember with #2, I would have Niles have a sippy cup of milk ready for Logan so I could get up in the morning, reach in the fridge and grab it out without having to look at or smell any food. I couldn't even talk about food. I feel like it does get worse, the more you have. At least for me it is, because you have certain things that are on your bad list from prior pregnancies. And not just foods - shampoos, lotions, blech. It will be better soon! (You are only sick like this at the beginning normally right?). I know it seems like forever, but some day it will just be a memory. A bad memory :-)
That is so funny Jamie! Joe thinks I'm making it up when I tell him I can smell his body from across the room. Poor guy will shower and scrub his body raw and I still can't stand the way he smells. It's wrong I tell, wrong! :-) Hang in there! Just read your post about all the baby things you've been missing! It'll be worth it! :-)
just be grateful your kids are not in diapers.....
Oh, I have a Super Smeller when I'm pregnant, too. It's awful.
You are so funny!! When I was prego with Abby we lived in these apartments across the street from Buca Di Beppo, so everytime I would step outside to go get the mail or even get into my car I would instantly get sick from the smell! All I have to say is thank goodness for all the shrubbery around that place! I hope things get better for you!
I can completely relate! I am so, so sorry! I get panicked everytime right before I should start and think, "oh, no...what if??" I know I would deal with it, cause what choice would I have, right? But, so far, I am just thankful I get to enjoy one baby right now!:) CAn't wait to hear what your having!
:) you put a smile on my face! Ahmen to no crock pot, the worst for me was a roast, yuck. I cant stand the smell of anything cooking....when does this go away again??
Yep, Bill can never wear Drakar again after my pregnancy with Shayna. Bill has a bad sniffer (he cant smell well) and he uses the lack of "the power" when we're in a inclosed space and a strange smell occures - thats just wrong.
These are the things we forget after the baby comes right. I am sorry that it is so bad. I bet it will be better after the 3 month mark. Good luck with every thing.
Smells are HORRIBLE...but you know what was even more weird? When I was pregnant I couldn't even stand to look at sweaters! Yes, sweater material grossed me out. So were you okay with the popcorn smell at the theater last week???? Yikes!
