Day 1: The Ship

For the past year or so we've been planning this cruise with our good friends, the Larsons, so we were soooo bummed when they had to cancel at the last minute. We definately missed them, but still managed to have some fun on our own. I flew from Chicago on Saturday to meet Jason in New Orleans where we kick started our 10 year anniversary vacation. It was nice enjoying a quiet dinner, staying up as late as we wanted and sleeping in as late as we wanted. It's amazing the little luxuries in life that you take for granted before you have kids. The next day we did a little shopping before heading to the ship. We sailed that night, all day the next day and then the following night. The first day on the ship all I wanted to do was relax and lay out by the pool. I never learn my lesson. It seems like every summer I get my token sunburn before I start lathering on the sunscreen. This time I went to the tanning bed and layed out a couple of weeks before we left in an effort to not get fried. So I thought I would be okay when I popped a couple of Dramamine pills and fell asleep for an hour by the pool. Apparently there's something about being closer to the equator that makes the sun hotter, go figure. Not only did I get a horrible burn (only on the front, mind you), but my chin got all blistered then scabbed up. It hurt so bad and it looked hideous. If that wasn't bad enough, my face broke out, like "14-year-old-going-through-puberty" bad. I think it must have been a heat rash, because it itched really bad. Then if that wasn't bad enough, my eyes get red and I looked like I had elephantitis on one of my eyelids. I think people probably thought I had contracted some sort of Avian Bird Flu. And to top it all off, I started my period a week early. It's a good thing I got all this new lingerie to spice up our anniversary because I was lookin' HOT! Besides getting fried, it was nice just hanging out, taking naps, going to the gym, watching movies, playing about 50 games of Yahtzee, eating all day long and enjoying all the different shows. They had some really funny comedians and I fell in love with our cruise director. He had a British accent--need I say more. It's okay, Jason condoned my crush when he yelled "hey, my wife loves you!" when he was walking by us.

leaving New Orleans our spacious interior room. I felt like we were in the 1950's with our seperate beds until they slid them together for us.

It was nice getting dressed up a couple of the nights

That is hysterical about the sun burn and zits and period. Why does everything have to go wrong all at once? I thought when I was this old I wouldn't have to be worrying about acne anymore, boy was I wrong.

Oh my gosh that was so funny to read. Well, I'd rather have that period thing happen after being married for 10 years than 3 days of marriage...yeah that happened to me and we purposely tried to plan the honeymoon around it but it didn't work.

Yay, I've been so excited to vicariously go on this cruise through you. And I won't even have to worry about getting a sun burn:) I'm totally dying as I picture you with your sunburned elephantitis pimple face. Poor, poor Jamie...but ha, ha, ha! I remember that we would toatlly do the same thing growining up....maybe, just maybe we won't get fried this time around. With your hot new lingerie I'll bet Jason hardly even noticed your pooor face:) I guess the period factor put a damper on that one though. Good thing there were other things to entertain you on the boat. Did the cruise director return the sentiment?

two things - 1.jamie, you are going to get freakin skin cancer. yes i am lecturing you, but you do this EVERY YEAR. Let's recall when we were 16 and you were still going to the tanning bed every day because you had paid for a full month even though you were lobster red.
2. i fell in love with my last cruise director too. and he was the biggest corniest geek ever, but then on the talent show night he sang this U2 song and wore these cool sunglasses and suddenly i got butterflies. there must be something in the water on those cruise ships.

Ahhh Jamie, I love how you keep things real (i.e. the lingerie comment)! And I agree with Nicole - you need to protect yourself against the sun my friend! That's really hypocritical of me to say, though, because we are going to Hilton Head in May, and I am hitting the tanning booth starting next month...

Pure entertainment! You guys are such a cute couple, and that's it I am planning a cruise for our 10 year! you've inspired me! So much fun! I love that Jason told the director of your feelings, now that is a secure man.

Sometimes I think you have the worst luck ever, and then I just wonder if you're accident prone! I was cracking up when I read this. I'm glad you made the most of it and had fun anyway. It looks like it was a great trip.
