Homecoming

I love the way Kylie has transitioned seamlessly to a new school and I love that she has the opportunity to be a part of the school's dance team. High school sports are so different now then they were when we were growing up. If you wanted to participate you tried out and unless you were completely non-athletic, most everyone made the team. Now days the words to Our Lady Peace ring true, "...ordinary's just not good enough today". You show up for a tryout and compete against 50+ highly talented girls for 5 spots on the pom team. And 45 girls leave the last day of tryouts in tears with their dreams crushed. That's what happened to Kylie last year and it was devastating. I'm so grateful switching to this new school has given her a chance to try out again to be on the school dance team because those memories made in high school are some she'll always remember. Tryouts over the summer didn't go as well as she had hoped, she had been dealing with a chronic back problem that we worked through with 10 weeks of physical therapy. The night before tryouts the pain was so intense she couldn't move or breathe. I told her to let the teacher know but she was too embarrassed. As a result she didn't make the team she was hoping for, but she still did make one of the company teams and after the teacher has gotten to know her she has seen her true talent and has talked about moving her up during the next semester. That was a huge confident boost for Kylie, who despite her immense talent has felt inferior. So long story short, her dance team performed at the half time show for the homecoming game. I loved seeing her out there doing what she loves with so many new friends she has made. And also, that standing aerial makes me hold my breath, but she does it flawlessly.

That same weekend she went to the dance with a group of friends. The girls ended up running late so we snapped a few shots with the boys before the sun went down. I had the pleasure of chaperoning them to In-n-out before they went to the dance and I have to say how much I love the new (and a few old) friends she has made. Love this girl and love seeing her thrive during this stage of her life.

Never a dull moment with this girl

Oh well you have TRULY delivered into the blogosphere this week J! Very much looking forward to feasting through your posts, which I always love; because you write so well, with humour and with heart, and you take speccy (aka spectacular) photos. For this first post, it must be like a hug to a mother's heart to see her firstborn accepted and valued... and how crazy is it to have schooling systems which send 95% of kids home crying after tryouts... boy... I don't think everyone's a winner, that's not true at all, but in school, there should be place for everyone to be in teams, learn creativity, discipline, etc ... instead of rejection!
